The handle is also made of steel is knurled and nickel plated. Many of my students have been bitten so hard by the jewelry making bug that they say I have turned them into monsters-they just can't get enough. This is Starett’s pocket scriber with a hardened steel point. I have been teaching community education beginner and intermediate jewelry making classes since my retirement. However, there just never seems to be enough time in the day to do it all, but I try! Now that I am retired, I am able to indulge in all my hobbies. I am an artist, scrapbooker, seamstress, woodworker and jewelry artisan.

I was in love, hook, line and sinker! While working full time and having a family here in northern Minnesota, my artistic endeavors slowed down but never stopped. On a visit to the Grand Canyon when I was a young woman, I was fortunate enough to help a Native American silversmith sand cast my first silver bracelet and bezel set a large turquoise nugget on top. That was the beginning of my jewelry making journey. My brothers are amazing and can make and do ANYTHING! When I was a little girl, my mother gave me an old carved cigar box, which I cherish, filled with pop beads, wooden beads and yarn for stringing. They always had a "we can do it, we can make it" attitude which rubbed off on my two younger brothers and me. I was born shortly after WWII to parents who grew up during the Depression. My philosophy has always been "I will never live long enough to learn everything I want to learn, go everywhere I want to go and see everything I want to see!" So, what I make and how I create it is always changing and evolving. Since I was using nickel silver, which is harder than copper or silver, to make the new clock part, it took three passes before I knew I would be able to easily see the scratched line when cutting. It is better to make several passes of the scribe tip on the metal to obtain a good scratched depth line to be easily visible than to try to scribe the line in one pass. Press the tips of the tool down firmly on the metal and the work surface.

Holding the tool at a slight angle with the outside tip aligned firmly against the sheet metal and the other tip on the metal. Placing a self-healing cutting mat on your work surface for this process will mean no scratches will be left on your work surface. Place one scribe tip against the outside edge of a straight piece of sheet metal and the other tip on the metal. Yippee, no measuring and I had the exact width of the piece. The adjustable screw was tightened until the jaws were tight on either side of the part. The caliper jaws were put on either side of the long narrow clock part. I recently needed to make a new part for an old clock. The divider caliper scribe is a great measuring tool without having to measure. There is nothing wrong with that method, but sometimes we need EXACT dimensions and that is where this tool comes in handy. Most of the time when we need a strip of metal a certain width, we measure, mark, and draw a cutting line to follow using a Sharpie marker. Why in the world would you want one of these? You don't really NEED it, but it is very useful and can come in handy.
